Making Family History Accessible Through Expert Replication
Our client had a simple but powerful objective:
How do we make genealogy accessible to more people?
While interest in family history research continues to grow, the process itself remains complex and intimidating for many newcomers. Traditional genealogy platforms often assume a level of expertise that most users simply do not possess.
Professional genealogists spend years developing investigative techniques, reasoning frameworks, and decision-making processes that enable them to navigate incomplete information, identify relationships, resolve contradictions, and uncover new avenues of research.
For many potential customers, this expertise gap created a barrier to entry.
The client recognised that if they could lower this barrier, they could dramatically expand the addressable market for their platform and accelerate customer adoption.
Our Approach
Rather than focusing solely on user interface design, we focused on understanding the expertise that sat behind successful genealogy research.
Working with experienced genealogists, we analysed how they think when conducting research:
How they evaluate evidence
How they identify gaps in information
How they prioritise investigative paths
How they handle uncertainty
How they determine what question to ask next
How they build confidence in a conclusion
Our objective was not simply to capture what they knew.
Our objective was to capture how they think.
This process, which we call Expert Replication, involved distilling the heuristics, reasoning patterns, and decision-making frameworks used by experienced genealogists into a structured conversational system.
The Solution
Using these expert-derived reasoning patterns, we designed a conversational experience that guides users through the same thought process an experienced genealogist would naturally follow.
The system continuously evaluates:
What information has already been collected
What information is missing
Which assumptions require validation
Where contradictions may exist
What the most valuable next question should be
Rather than forcing users through rigid workflows, the platform adapts dynamically to the conversation, helping users uncover information in a way that mirrors the guidance of a professional researcher.
Business Impact
By embedding expert reasoning directly into the user experience, the platform significantly reduced the expertise required to begin building a family tree.
This lowered the barrier to entry for new users, increased accessibility, and created the opportunity for the client to scale beyond traditional genealogy enthusiasts.
Most importantly, it demonstrated that expertise itself can be transformed into a scalable digital asset.
Instead of requiring every customer to become a genealogist, the platform made genealogical expertise available to every customer.
This became one of the earliest examples of our Expert Replication methodology in practice, capturing human expertise and making it accessible at scale through conversational AI.
